CNN, Michael Phelps and Spoilers

Last night, Michael Phelps won his 8th gold medal breaking the previous olympic record held by Mark Spitz since 1972.  If you went to bed early last night, you might feel a tinge of anger at me for telling you that.  Maybe you had the DVR going with plans to watch the results this morning over coffee and Cheerios.

The great thing about Twitter, blogs and the always-on web is that you are "always-on".  Information gets passed to you quickly and immediately.  There are millions of people around the world literally trying to scoop each other to break news stories and bring information to the masses first.  People who subscribe to CNN's breaking news Tweets were angered last night when they actually got the breaking news that Michael Phelps broke the record.  Statements like "Thanks for ruining the surprise. Do I have to stay off my computer during the Olympics?" appeared almost immediately after CNN posted the breaking news.

If anyone else is baffled by people's negativity about actually receiving breaking news from a Twitter user dedicated to delivering breaking news, please raise your hand.  If you are angry at CNN for doing what they should be doing and feel like they have "ruined the surprise", then yes, you do have to "stay off your computer during the Olympics."  Sheesh....
