Cuil.com is a search engine released by former Google engineers. If you visit the site, it has a pleasing interface, but the search results it returns are very, very lacking. The site became popular on its go-live date because of the Digg effect, and they experienced a crash (who has ever heard of a search engine crashing?). Subsequently, they have experienced a ton of bad PR.
Lesson 1: Don't go live with something until you are absolutely sure that it's ready for prime time. The net doesn't forgive.
Lesson 2: Don't wait too long to go live with something either. I'm unsure why/how these highly talented folks thought they could compete with Google, but I am left scratching my head wondering why anyone would devote the time to create yet another search engine.
